We have made it through another week and Friday is here. I hope you have some fun things planned this weekend and also get a chance to relax. With all the craziness both planned and unexpected that seems to pop up during the week, I always try to reserve some time on the weekends to really let go and unwind. Not only does it release any tension and stress that may have been slowly building during the week, but it also leaves me feeling rested and rejuvenated to tackle the week ahead. My methods for relaxation tend to change with the seasons, so here are the tricks I am using right now to refuel and reboot.
- Take a bath. Bath time is my favorite time. If I told you that in my dream world I would get to take a bath every single night would it surprise you? If I told you candles and luxurious bubble bath are requirements would you even bat an eye? During the week life often gets in the way of my desired nighttime ritual and I don’t get to take baths as often as I like. Thus I always make sure every Sunday night I carve out bath time. Sometimes music is involved, sometimes a great book, sometimes a fashion magazine chockfull of photos. No matter what the in bath entertainment may be, the sentiment is always the same, this is my time to disconnect from the world and my only worry is achieving the perfect water temperature.
- Inhale good smells. Maybe you don’t have a bathtub, or are currently in a rental where you are certain the risk of tetanus does not outweigh the benefits of a luxurious, soak in the tub. Fret not my pet for there is a simple answer: smell something good. I don’t care if it is a flower, an item from a bakery or even the bakery itself. An essential oil could work, or the aroma of a candle. Smell has a powerful way of evoking emotion, so find the smell that calms you and makes you feel centered. I personally have a ritual of lighting this incense on weekends. I love the smell and the way the scent lingers for a day or two into the start of the new week. Let whatever scent you choose be a reminder to take a moment, take some deep breaths and calmly exist in the moment.
- Take a walk. On days when the weather is not too terrible, this is my absolute favorite way to relax. Let this be an intentional walk, not simply a means of transport between two locations when you are in a hurry. On weekends I always like to take my dog on a long walk to the park. We don’t always have the time during the week to make the trek so saving it for the weekends feels like a special treat. Inviting a friend to walk with you can also be a nice way to connect and spend time with someone in a meaningful way. Take a walk with yourself, allow yourself to truly see your surroundings. Stop to admire whatever you like. Appreciate everything that catches your attention and feel content with the moment you are in.
