Winter is hard. If you are feeling down, or out of sorts, just know you are not alone. I normally try to keep negative feelings to myself, but last week the cold (Monday and Tuesday were below zero, unacceptable for March in my opinion) and the grey broke me. I had a week packed with social activities and when I would run into friends and acquaintances instead of saying I was “fine” or “all good” I would tell the truth: “I’m tired of this weather and it is making me really crabby.”
A shocking thing happened, EVERY SINGLE PERSON I talked to shared the same sentiment. I wasn’t the only one in a funk, we were all in the same boat. That was such a relief to hear. We live in a world where everyone is striving to keep up a picture perfect facade of his/her life, and it felt so refreshing to finally have unfiltered, real conversations with people. Winter IS hard, but we aren’t in this alone.
Whenever I am in a funk I intentionally do one thing a day that brings me joy. This doesn’t have to be anything major, it just has to be something a little special that serves as a reminder of the fun parts of life. I have been craving a turkey bagel sandwich for weeks. However, it’s not the healthiest food option, so I haven’t indulged. Yesterday when it came time for lunch a turkey bagel sandwich was the only thing that really sounded good to me, so I said “what the heck” and went for it. I ate every last bite and loved every morsel of that sandwich. I even added an iced latte for good measure!
No, that turkey sandwich isn’t going to raise the temperature outside. Or change my viewpoint on grey cloudy days (not a fan). But it was the perfect reminder that no matter the weather there are still small ways to bring joy into each and every day. Yesterday I chose a turkey sandwich, tonight I might choose a super luxurious bath. One step at a time we will all make it through this winter and into the spring!
