The Cactus is currently having quite the moment in home décor. I have historically always shied away from cacti believing they were too bohemian and Southwestern to fit in with my personal home style. That being said the current interpretation of the cactus is so gosh darn cute, that for the first time the cactus is truly catching my eye. The cactus is now more accessible than ever and can blend in well with a variety of styles.
The key to keeping this trend chic is to make sure you don’t overdue it. Just like the holiday and seasonal decorating that we discussed earlier this week, it is always a good idea to keep things fresh and current in your home (I personally believe when your home becomes stagnant you risk becoming immobile in other aspects of your life as well). However, just like seasonal decorating, all trends should be approached with a certain level of restraint. In the long run, you will be much happier with one or two semi-permanent cacti elements you really love than jumping into this theme head on (too much cacti would just feel too kitschy and potentially more like a Disney Themed Hotel than a home). For starters like all trends, this too will most likely have its moment in the sun before fading off into distant memory, and you never want to be the person who so over-invested in a given theme that you are stuck with it long after the trend has lost its luster.
All of the items shown above are small commitment décor elements that could easily be incorporated into a variety of home styles. The cacti candles (item 1) are even more charming in person. I have been seriously contemplating getting one to add an element of whimsy to my home office. The cactus light (item 2) is so cute and currently on sale for under $25.00! I could also see this on a desk in a creative workspace or it would look adorable in a children’s room. The white cactus serving ware (item cluster 3) is a little bit more expensive than the other items on this list, but will also retain their fashionable status for years to come. The white makes them timeless and you could use these pieces year after year. Throw pillows are one of the easiest ways to change up your décor, and this one (item 4) is so fun it would brighten up just about any space. The key to using throw pillows is to first invest wisely in a high quality yet neutral sofa and/or side chairs. Then use throw pillows as a way to update and enhance your space. This cactus hook (item 4) is the most subtle item on the list, but also an incredibly practical way to incorporate this trend into your home. Hooks always have a high premium in my home: for jackets, handbags, necklaces, towels, you name it… hang a hook and it will immediately be in use.
So what are your thoughts on the cacti trend? Is this one you are eager to embrace or are you ready for it to fade away like a Southwestern sunset?
