The above quote comes from Newt Scamander the main character in the Harry Potter Spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Which just goes to show you, sage advice can truly be found anywhere). I wouldn’t consider myself the hugest Harry Potter fan, but I do tend to see the movies when they come out and find them enjoyable enough to warrant a movie theatre screening. So it was with some level of surprise I walked out of the theatre having been so struck by this line, as I had entered the theatre not expecting to be struck by any line at all, just anticipating mild entertainment.
However there is so much truth to these words, and whenever I find myself worrying about a situation out of my control, I always repeat this phrase. Not only does worry rob us of the current moment, many of the things we worry about never even come true. Worry also reduces are reserves and drains our energy. Should the worst actually come to pass, why put yourself through the extra torture of having to face it twice (once in worry, once in reality)? For those who are natural worriers (myself included) this quote serves as the reminder to let life take its course. Worrying will never change the outcome, so deal with things as they actually happen and don’t waste your energy on that which has yet to (or might never) come to be.
