The Government shutdown earlier this week was a big reminder of just how important working together truly is. Now a government shutdown is a pretty extreme consequence of discord, however there is still a lesson to be learned that can be applied in our own daily lives.
When we work together and look out not only for ourselves, but also those around us, we create greater opportunities and open doors for everyone. It is like the improve concept of “yes, and” (yup that Second City Training is still coming in handy.) The concept of “yes, and” is that whenever you are in an improvisational scene, you not only agree with what your scene partners say but then also add to their narrative. This leads to smooth continuation forward and advancement of the storyline. To say the word no, or shut down your acting partner’s ideas would immediately end a scene and completely halt any progress that had been made. By working with your partner you both flourish and create a beautiful scene. Translate that to any area of your life where you are looking to make progress. Working together could lead to a promotion or new business venture, the start of a beautiful relationship, finally taking a dream vacation. All of these things can be achieved through collaborating with others. Banding together makes it easier to overcome obstacles and potential setbacks.
Working together starts small. We may not be able to get opposing political parties to see eye to eye (today, never give up hope!), but we can definitely work on creating more harmonious relationships with the people in our own lives. Set an intention this week to be cooperative in your relationships and maybe even reach out and create some new connections. Don’t just reach out to people you think can help you, also reach out to people you think you can be of assistance to as well. Healthy relationships are always a balance of give and take, and you never know when life will come full circle, and the person you help today, will aid you down the road.
Small changes lead to big changes and together we all will rise.
