Here we are day two and as promised here are my tips for getting the best darn sleep of your life. Disclaimer: I may not be a sleep doctor, but considering the sheer number of hours of my life I have dedicated towards trying to get a good nights sleep I am happy to say I have learned a thing or two about a thing or two. For it is only when we take care of ourselves and are well rested, that we can happily and healthily dedicate ourselves to all the wonderful things in our life that deserve our energy and attention. So, with no further ado my tips for a wonderful nights sleep:
- Black out shades: I first discovered black out shades in my housing when I studied abroad in Sweden. (phew, I feel so much better now that I have gotten that out of the way. Like every other American student that has ever studied abroad, I understand how imperative it is that people immediately know that I spent time drinking in another country under the guise of academic pursuits ;-). By telling people immediately about my time overseas it guarantees you truly appreciate how cultured and worldly I am. I hope you are picking up that I am writing in jest and good humor :-). Anyway, back to black out shades: simply put they are the best. They are definitely an investment, but when you stumble out of your bedroom at noon on a beautiful summer day because your shades were drawn and you had no idea the outside world even existed, you will thank me for that extra 2 hours of sleep (you don’t normally sleep until 10? What else is there to even do in the mornings?). Light can totally mess with your sleep cycle, so even if blackout shades aren’t in the cards right now do whatever you can to create a dark space for slumber. Sleep masks are a nice portable way to achieve total light blackout.
- White noise machine: My mom gave me this Dohm white noise machine for Christmas one year (White Noise Machine). I thought it was an interesting gift, so figured what the heck I would give it a try, and you know what it ended up being a total GAME CHANGER. I literally have been hoarding Bed Bath and Beyond coupons ever since with the ultimate goal to put one in every room in my condo and I wish I could travel with one always. City dwellers especially, this is a tool everyone should have in their sleep arsenal. It is just that good.
- Down Comforter: growing up in Wisconsin, the Company Store was the only way to go when selecting your down comforter and I stand by their quality to this day. You can choose all different levels of weight but I prefer the one where you feel like the comforter is almost so heavy you might suffocate. (seen here: Best Comforter Ever) I appreciate that level of protection and security when sleeping.
- Invest in Sheets: this should be a no-brainer, but so many people complain about their sheets that I guess it needs to be explained. You are worthy of incredible sheets, and they are always worth the investment. Sheets are such a personal thing; so find the ones you really like. You spend a third of your life in bed (way more if you are me, but who is keeping track?). Don’t you want to be swathed in whatever your version of personal heaven is? The answer is an unequivocal yes!
Sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite! And when you are rested and restored get ready to take on the world!
