Nothing in life is certain except for death, taxes and the inevitable fact that you will outgrow the storage space in your home. Now the first solution to this problem is to simply get rid of some stuff. The term Spring Cleaning exists for a reason, so this is a great time to get rid of some of that clutter. For yes, there is one more inevitable fact of life: we are currently in the middle of Spring which means a rainy weekend is most certainly in our future. Instead of spending the day lamenting the weather, roll up your sleeves and get to work clearing out that junk. Also, make the commitment to truly get rid of the stuff you clear out, don’t just put it all in your trunk where you will give it a free drive around town for the next several months (I know I can’t be the only one who is guilty of this bad habit… Oops).
So now let’s flash forward, the purge is done and all of your unnecessary junk has been expelled. What do you do if you still have some items that you would like to keep, but don’t necessarily have the space for a new closet or dresser/armoire in which to house those items? This is when the fun truly begins. Now you have the opportunity to play around with some small scale stylish storage. Storage bins are a great option for small spaces that need some supplemental storage. I recently discovered the brand Pehr (Website) that makes the awesome canvas storage bins pictured above. I came across these at Birchwood Wells in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, a really cool home decor store that is totally worth the visit if you are in the area. The bins pictured are some of Pehr’s more colorful options, but if you explore their website you will see they have many neutral options as well. I use these in my own home to store my board games and Puppy Dog Blair’s toys (which have a tendency to quickly overtake any room). What I like about these is that they are stylish enough to be out in the open but successfully hide all those odds and ends that cause an eye sore when not contained.
If you have the space another option could be to invest in a storage bench, which can add a fair amount of storage capability, and create additional seating (another thing that always seems to be in short supply, in smaller living spaces especially). Storage ottomans are another option that offer slightly less space for additional storage, but also take up less space in your home than some other storage solutions. Whichever option you choose, instead of looking at lack of storage as a problem you have to solve, consider it yet another opportunity to add some individuality and style to your home.
