In a world where women are told to be small, both physically (be thin!) and figuratively (don’t be too ambitious, take what you are given and be happy) Lindy West refuses to shrink so that others will feel more comfortable. Woo! If you have ever been told you were “too much” (too loud, too opinionated etc.), read this book and then don’t change a single thing!
In full disclosure I read this book after watching the first season of Shrill on Hulu. I LOVED the show, because it is a show about a real woman (no fake made for tv glamour) living a real life (she has a job that she goes to every day), and that is exactly the kind of story I want to hear. I cannot wait for season 2! When I heard the show was based on Lindy West’s memoir, well that book went to the top of my “to be read pile.”
West does an incredible job of tackling tough to talk about topics in a way that manages to be both heart wrenching yet also hilarious. She challenges the patriarchy and fatshamers alike (both groups have a lot in common, ahem insecurity ahem, and some overlap for sure). I walked away feeling like my horizons had been broadened and I was inspired to double down my support for the causes that are near and dear to my own heart. An enjoyable book that makes you think and feel called to action, why that is a fine read indeed!
